Helping women build sustainable livelihoods and break cycles of vulnerability

How the Program Works

1. Business & Family Care Training

Women attend a two-day microenterprise training that includes:

  • business planning

  • financial literacy

  • family care and positive parenting

  • psychosocial screening

AO social workers identify women needing additional support and refer them to internal counsellors or psychologists.

2. Seed Capital (In-Kind Support)

Women receive startup materials or stock based on their business plans.

They work to rebuild the seed capital in their savings.

If they succeed within one year, they keep the full amount to grow their business.

3. One Year of Follow-Up

Abraham's Oasis provides:

  • regular mentoring

  • home and business visits

  • links to microfinance institutions

  • community savings group introductions

  • planning and problem-solving support

This structured follow-up is a core strength of the programme.

Why the Programme Works

  • Intensive follow-up and mentoring

  • In-kind capital (safer and more sustainable than cash)

  • Psychosocial empowerment

  • Close partnership with communities and local authorities

  • Structured savings and financial literacy

  • Realistic, locally appropriate businesses

With a 95% success rate, this programme is a core pillar of Abraham's Oasis, supporting women in rebuilding sustainable, independent lives and living in dignity.

Programme Results

  • 95% of women become self-reliant within one year

Most participants consistently generate enough income to meet their families' basic needs.

  • Women transition from irregular income to running stable small businesses.

Participants move from unpredictable earning patterns to managing consistent micro-enterprises strengthened through training, seed capital, and one year of follow-up.

  • Children return to school and stay in school.

As household income stabilises, caregivers can afford uniforms and supplies, thereby improving attendance and performance.

Goal: Economically empower vulnerable women to generate a stable income to independently provide for their families.

 Overview

The Economic Empowerment Program began as a small initiative for women who had survived hardship and trauma. Women received counselling and simple business training, often supported by their children, who helped with basic literacy.

The results were transformational. Women quickly gained confidence and began generating income. Encouraged by this success, local authorities requested AO to expand the programme across more communities.

Today, eligible women from all Abraham's Oasis projects can participate.
