Grieving
She came with her sister, both grieving the recent loss of their dearly beloved mother. They had fled their home due to the war and were staying in a camp for displaced people. Conditions were hard, food not available but they had eachother.
Their mother became sick, no medication was available and no food to keep her strength up and eventually their dear mother died. They were left alone without proper adult supervision and were eventually referred to our shelter. The youngest girl was in a bad shape. She just couldn't believe or accept that her dear mother was no longer around. She was depressed and started to refuse to eat. We took her to the clinic where she was checked to rule out any medical issues. Nothing was found but the poor little girl kept deterioarating, loosing weight and becoming more withdrawn with every passing day. We found her aunt and we started to work with the aunt to look after the girls in the future. She was open to that idea and we started to plan to quickly train her in small business skills in order to empower her financially so she could look after the children financially. But while we were working on this the girl kept getting worse; the regular visits to the clinic were traumatic for her and counselling was not helping at all.
Finally we were referred to the local hospital where the little girl was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was immidately admitted. The aunt was willing to stay with her in the hospital and care for her.
Currently the girl is doing much better, she is eating and she is happy to have her aunt around. We are relieved that we got the source of her physical problem and are hopeful that she will be released from the hospital soon. We hope that now she becomes physically stronger she will be able to process the loss of her mother in a better way while being in the care of her aunt.
The children and caregivers in our shelter have all been taken to the hospital for tuberculosis testing, just to reassure everyone and detect any potential contamination.
Thank you for your ongoing support to the children in our shelter!
